A sash drop is a mechanism used in double-hung windows to keep the sashes (the movable parts of the window) in place when they are opened. It is a small device, usually made of metal, that attaches to the bottom rail of the upper sash and slides into a receptacle on the top rail of the lower sash.
When the sashes are closed, the sash drop is engaged, holding the upper sash securely in place. To open the window, the sash drop is disengaged by lifting the upper sash slightly and pressing the release button on the sash drop. This allows the upper sash to be lowered for ventilation or cleaning.
